A Virtual Museum - Your Town, the Borough and its History
Nottons the outfitters was started in 1834 by George Henry Notton.  Initially located in the High Street, the shop moved to Berkley Crescent in 1888. The business was purchased by A F Mole in 1920 who died in 1923 and his son, Edgar, then took over.  In 1931 a Boys outfitting department opened which provided uniforms for local schools.  The shop was rebuilt in 1933 when a new tailoring department was opened.  After the war, in 1946, the business expanded into Harmer Street.  The firm became a limited company in 1957.  The company motto was “it concerns us most that we serve you well”.  Mr Edgar Mole was well known in the local community and was President of the Rotary club in 1949.  Mr R Mole took over as Managing Director in 1975 and held that position until his death in 1981. The business was put up for sale in May 1983.
