The Roman temple complex at Springhead may have been built there because of a belief in the healing qualities of the nearby springs.

The Britons already had a shrine there, probably dedicated to the Gods of the springs and the stream.

Around AD 340, the temples were abandoned and a blacksmith set up a workshop in one of them. As the temples fell down most of the stone was taken away for use elsewhere.
