General Description

This area includes all properties in The Hill, excluding Nos. 1 and 2. Also St. Botolph's Church, and Ye Olde Leather Bottel Public House.

History

The origins of the area lie mainly in the medieval period, when the triangular central space formed the village green. Its use as a market in the seventeenth century led to the area being known as Market Hill. The expansion of Northfleet as a centre for cement works and shipbuilding in the nineteenth century resulted in the evolution from a village into part of a town. As a consequence, its function as a local centre was diluted, this role being taken up by the High Street. The position was again reversed in the twentieth century following large scale demolition and rebuilding of the area adjacent to The Hill.

Character

The area is dominated by the main road, relieved at its centre by the triangular open space which forms the area's main focus. Defined by buildings on all sides, with the exception of the south west corner which opens out into the churchyard, the primary role of this area is for car parking, although recent environmental improvements have raised the quality and appearance of this function.

St. Botolph's Church (Grade I listed) dates mainly from the fourteenth century, although there is some thirteenth century and earlier work. The secular buildings in general post-date the 1500s, most dating from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, although No. 31 is probably the remains of a fifteenth century open hall; once the Plough Inn, it is now in office and residential use. Dominating the southern approach is Sir Giles Scott's monolithic brown brick structure - the Grade II listed Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Assumption built in 1914 with the same Gothic vertical emphasis used by him in the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral.
